The University of Gloucestershire has been named the UK’s greenest university by student campaigning group People & Planet.

People & Planet published its Green League 2008 to highlight the universities which are doing the most to reduce their effect on the environment.

The newer universities performed most strongly in the league, with Gloucestershire being followed by Plymouth and the University of the West of England. People & Planet described the league as showing ‘a remarkable improvement in environmental management and performance in the UK’s Higher Education sector in the past year’.

This change in the sector is down to the thousands of students who have been campaigning for greener campuses, the group said.

The 2008 league is the second of its kind, with last year’s Green League winning best campaign in the British Environment and Media Awards.

Professor Patricia Broadfoot, vice chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire, commented:

“I am delighted with the University of Gloucestershire's result in this year's People and Planet Green League. At the University of Gloucestershire we regard the search for sustainability as the biggest issue facing mankind today. Consequently we have put it at the heart of our University development plans.

“Our success in the league table is a great encouragement for all of us!”

David Norman, director of campaigns at the World Wildlife Fund, said:

“With many UK universities leading the research on the environmental threats facing our planet, it's common sense that they also lead in environmental performance. These advances are a welcome response to the urgency of tackling the threats to people and nature.”

The lowest ranking universities were the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Trinity College Carmarthen.
