Imperial College Union has voted by a wide margin to disaffiliate from the National Union of Students.

Imperial rejoined the NUS in 2006 after a long period of disaffiliation stretching from the 1970s. This week however, 70% of 2,075 voters voted 'No' to staying in the Union.

The referendum at Imperial was called after the NUS conference this year voted against planned sweeping reforms that aimed to modernise the Union.

Imperial now rejoins the ranks of non-affiliated Unions, which include those at Aston University, Southampton, St Andrews and Glasgow. Edinburgh University and Northampton recently rejoined.

The NUS has suffered high-profile financial problems in recent years; the membership fee from Imperial College (around £46,000) is likely to be missed.

The president of Imperial College Union told Live! that students felt the representation offered by the NUS was 'woefully lacking'.
