Manchester is the takeaway capital of the UK, it has been found, ordering more takeaways per household than any other UK city.

In fact, those living in the north of the UK in general are likely to be bigger takeaway fans, with only one of the top five ‘takeaway cities’ being in the south.

Mancunians eat an average of 2.9 takeaways a week, the survey from www.Just-Eat.co.uk has found, with 33.5% of the public getting one takeaway a week, and 14.6% ordering more than three times a week. The other biggest takeaway cities were York, Liverpool, London, Wigan, Birmingham ,Leeds, Nottingham, Wakefield and Chester.

Perhaps worryingly then, a new report from Which? has found that the average Indian curry contains 23.2g of saturated fat – more than a woman’s recommended daily intake - and 1,338 calories.

One portion of a Chinese takeaway contained 19 teaspoons of sugar, and a 300g portion of takeaway pepperoni pizza also contained more saturated fat than a woman's recommended daily amount and more than two thirds' the recommended daily allowance of salt for an adult (the average pepperoni pizza is 450g).

There is no legal requirement for takeaways to list the nutritional content of their food.

Neil Fowler, the editor of Which?, said: "We don't want to be killjoys when it comes to takeaways.

"Everyone's entitled to enjoy a treat while they're watching the footy or a movie, but we would like people to be aware of just how much of their daily food intake comes in just one meal."
