Sheffield Hallam student Phil Bridge has created the world’s first cardboard bicycle.

Cycling enthusiast Phil, who is coming to the end of a course in product design, has created the bike in an effort to stop bike thieves deterring would-be cyclists.

A bicycle is stolen once every 71 seconds in England, but the cardboard bike could be sold for as little as £15, and therefore would be less susceptible to theives.

Phil also created the bike to support the principle of cheap and ecological transport; the prototype is made almost entirely from recyclable and recycled materials.

Now it is hoped it will be taken on by a company who can see the potential of its green credentials.

Phil said: “The lightweight quality of the cardboard, combined with its low cost, means it is possible to create a bargain-bike that is also less susceptible to thieves. At the moment low-cost bikes are usually very heavy, which can also put people off.”

He told The Telegraph that his bike is strong enough to support anyone as long as they weigh less than 12 stone, and that it won’t go soggy in the rain.
